Grand Canyon, AZ Sunrise

After seeing the Grand Canyon yesterday afternoon in the late afternoon sun / light the images ... stunningly paralyzing... are hard to describe. The pix don't come close to capturing the powerful granduer of the Canyon. I knew we had to get up and see the sunrise here.

Just South of the park a couple of miles is Tusayan... a tourist trap of the first order. Motel rooms were $ 175... highway robbery for sure. The national park system has been hijacked into this mindset of allowing private contractors to run the lodges/ cabins/ infrastucture of our national parks.... and they have priced out the lodging for tha average citizen. The lodges / cabins IN the park... a few hundred yards from the canyon are priced at $175+ a night. That's hard for a family to visit the Grand Canyon and stay for 3 to 4 days.... it's expensive. They are making a profit doing this. The park rangers still maintain the park / canyon... you just have to have big $$$ to stay there.

At Rubys outside of Bryce Canyon the room rates at Rubys Best Western were $ 77 a night; very doable... normal market rates... a mile from the Canyon. Rubys had ALL amenities + for travelers. Rubys had a big 300 unit motel... had pools, gift shops, inhouse resturaunts very afordable, guide / outfitter services for horse rides around the park and into the canyon. Rubys did all this... still made a profit... and charged only $77 a night. But the contractors running our national park housing have to charge $100 MORE per night. I don't like this. I want our National Park system to run the lodging.... the rangers and staff know more about how to look after our parks.

Tusayan was a tourist trap a mile south of the Grand Canyon. The Grand Canyon is one of the most visited of the nationa park system. I know they want to make a profit, and deserve to... it just seems too comercial for a magnificent place.

The view of the sunrise puts everything on the back burner.... you stand in awe. ... and forget about the rest. ... your soul is arrested in time.

You never drink twice from the same stream.
